Call for Papers: SF Television Reference Books

Call for Authors

SF Television Reference Books

to be published in the Rowman & Littlefield “Science Fiction Television” series

Rowman & Littlefield is seeking authors for two new scholarly reference books on American science-fiction television, to be published as part of its rapidly growing “Science Fiction Television” book series. These single-volume reference works will be marketed to college & university, high school, and larger public libraries. Each should be a comprehensive introduction and overview of its subject: an authoritative, go-to source for established scholars and students alike that reflects recent popular-culture scholarship, but is accessible to non-specialists.

Encyclopedia of SF Television Anthology Series. This volume will focus on SF-and-Fantasy-themed series consisting of stand-alone episodes with no continuing characters other than the host or narrator.  It will include articles on the series themselves; significant individual episodes; major producers, directors, and writers; production issues (censorship, sponsorship, special effects); adaptations, and major themes (time travel, aliens, dystopias)

Encyclopedia of Children’s SF Television. This volume will provide a comprehensive set of entries on SF-themed programs aimed explicitly at children, from Tom Corbett, Space Cadet to Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. It will encompass both animated and live-action series, and use an expansive definition of its subject that includes borderline-SF series (Jonny Quest) and SF-themed segments of non-SF series (Peabody’s Improbable History).

Authors interested in writing either of these volumes should submit a proposal including: 1) A brief statement of interest (what about this volume, in particular, appeals to you?); 2) A tentative  list of entries, with some indication of proposed lengths for each (short, medium, long); 3) A brief CV; 4) A writing sample consisting of one or two entries from your tentative list.

Proposals for any given volume will be accepted until the volume is assigned. Queries about potential volumes not listed here are also welcome. Authors may submit proposals for multiple volumes, but each proposal should be complete in itself.
