Femspec Communique

FEMSPEC, a peer-reviewed journal, develops community for people engaged in speculating, theorizing, creating and questioning gender across boundaries. We emphasize interdisciplinary approaches and encourage work on teaching as well as literary and cultural criticism and creative material. Out impetus came from the collectively-perceived lack of attention to science fiction, fantasy, magical realism, and supernatural works in feminist journals; the lack of consistently-evolving levels of feminist criticism in sf criticism in the historical moment in which we were born; and the inadequacy of magical realism publishing outlets in the United States.

Our recent issues include…

(14.2) Great Age 1 and (15) Great Age 2 – Double Issue

These two special issues are the first of three volumes that feature critical articles, nonfiction, and original creative work that address the issues of ageing and ageism in a society already concerned with appearances and the material.

Femspec Retreat:

Femspec is pleased to announce its latest plans for an artistic/writing retreat. Set on the idyllic island of Isa Mujeres, Mexico, off the Coast of Cancum, the Femspec retreat will be the perfect place to relax, meet like-minded people and take some time out so you can catch up with that much-needed piece of writing or artwork.

The retreat will consist of workshops in the morning, writing/work time in the afternoons and open readings and showcases in the evenings – all while socializing, eating, and drinking, of course!

A single workshop will cost $75 and attendance for the whole week $300. Each workshop will be hosted by a guest expert in that particular field or discipline – watch the Facebook page for more updates!

Attendees will need to find their own accommodation on the island, but all events will be held at Femenina Sube on Avenida Juarez, downtown Isla Mujeres.
